Black History Month - What do you think?

Established in 1976, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among other nations. It is intended to celebrate the contributions blacks in the societies in which they live. In our case, it is the role that African-Americans have played – and continue to play – in American history and life. There are always the obvious famous African-Americans to focus on during this time: Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and others.

I have chosen to focus this year on the contributions of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I hope you enjoyed the film that we watched in class, and I hope it made you think beyond the “obvious” African-Americans that we usually focus on during celebrations like this.

Use your comments here to express your ideas about the importance of Black History Month. Is it necessary to have a month dedicated to the contributions of black Americans? What about other months like this – Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and other such celebrations? Who are some of the African-Americans that you think best represent the meaning of this month? I want to hear what you think and feel. If you disagree with what someone writes, you should comment on it but you MUST remain respectful. I will not tolerate any personal attacks, rude, or inappropriate comments. Most importantly – HAVE FUN!!

I think black history month is very important because its not everyday when we recongize all the african americans who actually changed the way we live now. I also tink that the other months are just as important as black history month such as hispanic month which celebrates a hanics who did something in others lives. some people that made a difference in african americas lives are marther luthr king jr which made some people realize that you shouldn't be judged by the color of your skin but by your actions. rosa parks which sayed to everyone that it isen't fair to give up her seat so the white peple can sit. and there are plenty more, but those ar he ones i really remeber the most.

Ok, it better work this time. I think Black History Month is a time to celebrate the black heroes who shaped our free nation. Rosa Parks helped people sit on a bus wherever they wanted. Jackie Robinson helped people play any sport no matter what race they were. Last but not least, MLK. He was the one that brought blacks and whites together. It's good that we have Women's World Health Month and Hispanic Heritage Month because it's celebrating the great things about our nation. There are many more black heroes but I feel these are the ones who shaped our nation most. They will never be forgotten.

Black history month is one of my most favorite holidays because it teaches everyone that it dosent matter what race you are, the african american i think had the most impact on the world. I mostly agree with Martin Luther King Jr.his "I HAVE A DREAM" speech and his confidence made it so all races can go to the same stores, schools, and malls. and if he wouldent have made that speech i wouldent have some of the friends and teachers i have today so i'm so thankful for that, i completly agree with Mariah Rosa Parks also made a huge impact.
hi class, hi Mr.Veliz:)!

The person that will best represent black history month will be Martin Luther King Jr because Martin was the one that led people away from discrimination.Martin also worked very hard to inspire people not to judge by the color of your skin but by whats on thw inside.Martin wasnt worried about his safety he was working to make the world a better place in discrimination.

Black History Month is important to me because it celebrates strong leaders who helped shape our country in to what it is today.
With out strong African-Americans who weren't afriad to stand up and fight for what was right our country probobly wouldn't be as succsesful as it is now. For each great African-American there should be a day or a monument in celebration of that true leader. Hispanic month should be celebrated evenly.I strongly believe that the reson is what America is, is because we have a diverse country who believes in change and that people should NOT be judged by their color but by their character.Thank you to all African-Americans for all that you did to help this nation a better place to be.

I am glad that we have Black History Month so that we can appreciate those who have changed our life and the way people live.Last week when we watched a video about Jakie Robinson it really showed me how they lived back then and how he bileived that whites and blacks should play together in sports or in any other activity. If it was the same way now as it was back then when blacks and whites couldn't be together I dont know if I could stand it becouse most of my friends are black and thier fun to hang out with.Black History Month is just a way to show that.

Black history month is very important because it shows people what sacrafises African Americans made to end slavery and raceism in the world.

We all know slavery was a very very cruel thing back then but we have to talk about it so we know what African Americans did to stop descrimination. So its important we don't ignore it.

the person that i pick this month to suport black history month is Huey Newton a Civil Rights Activist. I think People all over the world should celebrate black history month every day and month
and year!

Pretty good so far. Remember the basic writing rules - capitalization, etc.

I personally disagree with all these people above me; I don’t think that a certain month should be dedicated to a certain race and/or sex. I understand that African Americans are an important part of our country, but I believe that other races are important as well. There is a black history month but not a white history month. I personally don’t think that’s fair. I ask why we don’t have a white history month, and the response I get almost every time is, “The other 11 months are white history month” or sometimes there is a remark “Why do blacks get the shortest month of the year”. If there wasn’t a certain month dedicated to certain people, all of this confusion would not happen. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for the men and women such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Jackie Robinson. They stood up for what they believed in and never backed down.

The video on Jackie Robinson was very interesting to me. I enjoyed watching it and I’m glad that Mr. Veliz chose that video. There is something about Jackie Robinson that just amazes me. I think it’s the fact that he actually had the nerve to get up and say exactly what he believed. He actually had the strength to not give up when he was picked on and teased. If it had been me, I don’t know if I could have faced the whites when I was teased and made fun of. So, thanks Jackie, and all of the other African Americans and Whites that actually stood up and said what you believed. :)

I think that black history month is a very important month. And it should not be done just once a year in February because African Americans have done a lot of things in the history like Rosa parks were she did not wanna get up from her seat to the white man and she said there for her color.

I think that a lot of people that are color should have the same respect no matter what and I think the way they done things in history was wrong cause they disliked people for there skin color and not the inside.
I am glad that we do have February a black history month so we do have time to go back and see what they have done for us.

RAINEY!
you know you like the way I did my name. ha
whats up?

I think that Jackie Robinson best represents this month beacause he broke the color barrier in baseball.Took harsh slurs and insults and still was a phenominal baseball player no matter what color his skin was.

To me Black History Month is one of americas most important holidays. For example Martin luther king jr. gave his I have adream speach allowing black and whites to freely come together.Jackie Robinson allowed anyone play any sport.Last but not least Rosa Parkes gave people the right to sit any where on a bus. Many more famous blacks were also important to our country that gave us free rights. Now in our life without wise and courageous african americans we would be without so much. That is why Black History Month is so important and should never be forgotten.

Hopefully you get this. We are so grateful to have so many great African Americans that made a huge difference in America. Like Rosa Parks, MLK, and Muhammad Ali. These great people did so many great things including standing up for what they believe in. Rosa Parks is the person who made it possible for black people to sit in the back of the bus. She got arrested, but it was worth it. Now MLK did something we will never forget. If he didn’t do what he did some of us wouldn’t even attend SCMS. MLK made it possible for people not to be judged on the color of your skin, but on your character. He is the one who made it possible to drink from this and that water fountain. Today black people can just walk right in to a McDonalds. But back then you probably wouldn’t even be aloud in a McDonalds. But it has now changed all because of one person, MLK! Now another great African American is Muhammad Ali. He made it possible for people to box and he is a former Heavyweight Champion of the world. And an Olympic gold medal winner. He boxed as a kid, and dropped out of high school to pursue boxing. As you can see these great African Americans did make a huge difference in America’s life! That is what I think of Black History Month
